  1. SLASH AND SPREAD
  2. DART MANIPULATION

With these TWO basic pattern drafting techniques, you can achieve ANY STYLE you desire!

DART MANIPULATION: You move the darts where ever you want them or change them into attractive shaping seams.

“SLASHING AND SPREADING”: Slash and spread your patterns to add fullness in your skirts, sleeves or any pattern that you want fullness.

Darts are used to control fullness and shape the fabric to your body. You can manipulate the dart from a basic bodice to achieve Princess Seams. You can achieve this by simply moving the bust dart to the shoulder, and then joining it with the waist dart. You can create variations of this seam. You can shape from the armhole instead of the shoulder.

Want a skirt with a yoke at the waist? Move the waist darts.

To achieve a full skirt from a basic skirt, you will draw lines along the length of your skirt, cut along the lines, then spread them out to achieve a full hem.
